In his book, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, author James Bradley describes the countless sacrifices that were made at the Battle of Iwo Jima, fought from Feb 19-Mar 26, 1945. Without a doubt one of the most heroic battles in the annals of American Military History, Iwo Jima saw over 26,000 casualties of which 7000 Marines were killed in action. More Medals of Honor were given in that battle than any other battle in American History. Yet commenting on the motivations of the men, Bradley, himself a Navy Cross winner in that battle, would write, “It wasn’t a matter of living or dying or fighting. It was a matter of helping your friends.” As we approach Memorial Day, let us remember not only the heroism of those valiant warriors but let us never forget that heroism finds its impetus in love for others. Jesus said, “Greater love has no man but that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). On this Memorial Day we rightly remember those who have lived and died to make our lives free and better. At the same, let us remember that Jesus Christ lived and died to set us free and give us “life abundant” (John 10:10). What better purpose can we apply our faith to than that of making the daily sacrifices that help others find freedom and abundant and joyful life that Jesus came to give?
