FROM THE SECOND CHAIR
A Diet or a Feast?
I TIMOTHY 4:8 – “FOR BODILY DISCIPLINE IS ONLY OF LITTLE PROFIT, BUT GODLINESS IS PROFITABLE FOR ALL THINGS SINCE IT HOLDS PROMISE FOR THE PRESENT LIFE AND ALSO FOR THE LIFE TO COME. “
It could be that a New Year’s resolution reflects the belief that what a person does on the first day of the year will have an effect on him during the entire year.
There are many good goals for us to set in all of our lives for the New Year; to stop smoking, to lose weight, and to stop beating my wife.
The point I am trying to make is that there are many positives to one single action… if we stick to it. But I would also say that if we do something in the New Year and only make it for six months, we have still made some very good steps toward our goal.
For example, losing weight. We can see that are numerous good things that can come from it.
But looking back at the Scripture, “For bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”
There are benefits of godliness that are not just temporal, but eternal.
II TIMOTHY 3:16-17 – “ALL SCRIPTURE IS INSPIRED BY GOD AND PROFITABLE FOR TEACHING, FOR REPROOF, FOR CORRECTION, FOR TRAINING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS; THAT THE CHILD OF GOD MAY BE ADEQUATE, EQUIPPED FOR EVERY GOOD WORK.”
While it is fine to be concerned about our physical health, we need to be passionate about our spiritual lives. Are we closer to the Lord today than we were last year at this time? What would you like to say next year when someone asks you this question?
The New Year is upon us; shall we diet to lose weight?
Or should we be feasting on the Word of God? For what is dieting compared to the riches of heaven?
It is a New Year, shall we diet, or shall we feast on the Word of God?
That is what I think anyway.
