FROM THE SECOND CHAIR
It is the Christmas season, and it is the time of year that we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In today’s society the Christmas season starts sometime before Thanksgiving…Not because we want to celebrate the birth of the Savior, but because merchants want to get as much of our money in their pockets as soon as possible.
But Hollywood is looking to get some of our money as well. TV shows, movie theaters all have a new Christmas movie we need to see if we really want to experience Christmas.
But their motives are less than pure; they are not selling the idea that Christ came as the one and only Son of God; they are not presenting a time to celebrate the Savior; they are selling their own ideas about what they think that Christmas should be.
There was a Christmas episode of the “Brady Bunch” that I remember years ago when one of the children was troubled during Christmas because they wanted their mom to get her voice back. And there was a scene where, with the help of her father, the child prayed…to Santa Claus.
You see Hollywood will never get it right because they just do not understand.
But for the Christian, the story of Christmas is more than a story, it is the message of salvation. We understand that from the very beginning of time God had a plan of salvation.
In the very first book of the Bible, God had a strategy to bless all the nations and kingdoms of the world through His beloved Son.
We do not celebrate Christmas because of Santa Claus, Christmas trees, Christmas lights, or presents. These are only ways that we celebrate Christmas, but it is not WHY we celebrate.
For a Christian, Jesus is the light of life, and Jesus spoke about the fact that no one lights a candle and hides it. We are told to let our light shine so that the rest of the world would see it and glorify our Father who is in heaven.
We are told to let this light shine all year round, but especially during the Christmas season.
That is what I think anyway.
